Wow, my question about which type of stove people prefer generated a lot of comments. So far gas stoves are definitely in the lead. I'll try to keep you posted if more comments come in. I did find out about some readers that I didn't know were there -- you know who you are, you lurkers!
I wanted to post a picture of something else that we installed in our kitchen while Michael was here on Saturday. I had never seen one until when our son Mark and wife Katie had one put in their new home. It is a plastic pan with a drain that you put under your washing machine. Here's a picture:

You have to drill a hole in the floor but the pan has a drain cover that allows the water to drain out in the case of a machine overflow or other tragedy but it's closed on the bottom so bugs can't get in.

This is the first house we have lived in with the washer located just off the kitchen, so we thought this would perhaps prevent a possible flood. As my high school PE teacher used to say "It's better to prepare and prevent than to have to repair and repent."
Have any of you installed one of these? If so have you had an overflow where it saved the day?
Becka

I have one, Becka, but I’ve never had an overflow. Good to know it’s there if you need it, though!

Wow – this is just what I need. Where did you get the pan? I’ve been checking around and can’t find one.
Thanks,
Kathy

Hi Kathy,
My husband got the pan for under the washer at Home Depot. I actually just saw some in there a couple of weeks ago when we were in there. You do have to drill a hole in the floor for the drain. You also have to lift the washer into the pan so that makes it a little more difficult for cleaning purposes. I am amazed at the amount of dirt that collects in the pan–I guess it shows up more on the stark white surface.
