I didn't make gifts this year--although i have in the past. But my daughter has made handmade gifts for her grandmothers and aunts since she was very little and had no money. The last few years she has knit her gifts. This year she knitted socks for everyone, including her dad. Sadly she ran out of time, so my gift was the yarn, not yet made up! :) But she knows she has a very understanding mother who will gladly wait until she has time.

Vivey, I have knit some dishclothes with the varigated red/green/off white yarn and had the same thing happen. It's not too much of a problem for a dishcloth (although I always tell people to wash dishes with them before they throw them in the laundry!) but I'm sure it was disappointing to put all that work into the trivets and have that happen.

I really like the table runner! I crocheted dish clothes and hot pads to place under hot dishes for the table with variegated red and white cotton yarn for my sister. Sadly, the colors ran as soon as they got wet! I'm not sure what happened, because I've used this same brand for years and even made some for myself with their red, green and white variegated yarn and it was fine. I made a dish cloth for myself out of the red and white with the left over yarn and it too turned pink and red the first time I used it.

Becka,

I call them do-it-yourself Chicken Soup books! Before I got a computer, I had a little machine that only sent and received e-mail. I had to print everything off. I started making extra copies for my elderly friends. The Lord gave me the name of Apples of Gold from Proverbs 25:11, "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver." It's a word picture that has intrigued me since my student years at bj.

When I got my first computer in January 2003, I was able to download tons of stories, jokes, etc. I expanded my ministry so that it now goes out by snail mail to about 30 people. Over the years, I've found that it means a great deal to those who are out of the mainstream (i.e. no computer). The oldest person on the mailing list is a lady who was one of my mom's closest friends. Aunt Elsie will be celebrating her 98th birthday on Tuesday of this week. Her mind is still as sharp as ever.

Melanie, you tackled a very ambitious project. I'm sure the recipients will treasure them.

Ann, I'm sure your booklets were greatly appreciated. You made your own Reader's Digest!

I just finished robes for my two youngest grandchildren. I just sent them off and did not take pictures, so I can't share. I sure enjoy sewing, especially children's clothing. These were for a 6 year old girl and a 22 month old boy. They live in the north so I made them from fleece. It is light blue with skating polar bears on it.

I did make my Christmas gifts, but not in this way. I have a snail mail ministry to mostly elderly people who don't have computers. I print out stories, jokes, devotionals, poems, etc. for them.

Usually I give books as gifts to family and friends at Christmas, but the postage to mail them has gotten to be too much. I printed out stories, jokes, etc. for Christmas gifts for ten people. I printed out about 1,000 pages (usually no more than 2 or 3 of any one item). The cost of paper and ink wasn't much, and the postage was affordable....and I got to read a lot of good stuff.

I cross stitched 10 different snowmen patterns for all the women on my mom's side of the family. It took all year and for awhile I wasn't sure I was going to get them all finished in time! They loved them.
