Dewey

I realized this week that it's been a while since I wrote a post about one of my Christmas books. I have been reading a delightful biography about Dewey, the library cat from Spencer, Iowa.

He was a tiny kitten when he came to the library. He had been shoved into the library drop box one cold morning in January of 1988 and went on to reside there until his death in 2006. He was quite famous in his time and there were news stories about him all over the world. If you like cats or animal stories you would probably enjoy reading about Dewey.

I have never been to a library with a cat, but I have been to a couple of stores here in Greenville which have cats in residence. How about you--do you know of any libraries or businesses where pets reside?

We have two cats as those of you who read my husband's blog know. They are very difficult to photograph, especially with a digital camera. By the time I take the picture they have generally moved on out of camera range. I did snap a couple of cute shots of one of the cats the other day. She was lying in the sun and enjoying herself so much that she didn't get up and run away. Here are the best pics I could find of both of them.

Here is Clementine:

Your book is a popular one, Becca. I’ve been on the waiting list at the public library for over 3 months to get my hands on it! I love animals, especially cats, and I enjoy reading about them–yes, James Herriott’s books are among my favorites. Have you read any books about Norton, the cat who went to Paris? I’m eager to find out more about Dewey.

We have two cats at our house–Spot and Dot–who give us endless hours of pleasure. I’ve seen two cats who live with the owners of a furniture shop not far from Haywood Mall. At this moment, I can’t remember the name of the store–but they specialize in solid wood furniture and accessories–finished and unfinished. Their two cats are Teddy and Tilly (I think that’s the name), who greet customers, lounge on the counter, and if petted, will follow you around the store as you browse. A definite plus for cat lovers. When we go on vacation, one of our favorite activities is to visit antique stores. We often encounter pets at these stores–usually a cat or dog. Our vet also has several cats who own the place. The doctor has a principled objection to euthenasia unless recovery is unexpected. But he has patients’ owners who don’t want to deal with a sick cat, so bring it in “to end its suffering.” If the owners refuse treatment, our vet treats the animal, and after it recovers, will offer it for adoption. But some that have never been adopted, just live there at the animal hospital. I love our vet! :)

Rhonda, I have sent you an email. It sounds like you have a wonderful vet. We have had to have two cats euthanized. One had terminal cancer and could no longer walk or eat and another had been poisoned and was nearly paralyzed. Both of those cats had been strays who “just happened to show up in our yard.” (Rob said we must have had a little chalk drawing of a cat on our curb to let them know they were welcome.) Our vet and her staff were also very compassionate and they even sent us sympathy cards. Both of our cats are pretty old and it will be a sad day around here when we lose them.

Our favorite toy store has a rabbit, but it’s a little scary since the lady told us not to pet him. What?!
