Granola

picture of Jar of Granola

I recently read a couple of recipes for granola that inspired me to make some. I did a Google search and came up with some recipes by Pam Anderson, who often has recipes in the Sunday magazine section of the newspaper. Her recipe seemed to have less oil and sugar than a lot of the ones I found. I have also tried making it with the Splenda brown sugar and found it works just fine.

She gives a basic formula for the granola and then has ideas for quite a few variations. I have a good variety of dried fruits and nuts on hand right now and have been having fun trying a few different combinations.

One thing about this recipe which makes it extra good is that she tells you to pour the liquids over the dry ingredients in the baking pan and then squeeze the mixture with your hands to form clumps. As the granola bakes these clumps form little crunchy clusters which are delicious!

I was talking about this recipe with my friend Sandy and she suggested lining the baking pans with parchment paper to make the clean up even easier.

Here is one of our favorite varieties with dried cranberries and sliced almonds:

So, if you like granola give this recipe a try and create your own favorite combination.

I like the idea of using a bit of water to help form clumps! The recipe I have used in the past for granola calls for even less oil/sugar than the one you linked to, and it always is yummy, though probably looser vs. clumping (8 cups oats to 1/2 cup each oil/honey). It has been quite awhile since I’ve made any granola, so your post has inspired me to make some soon. Hmm, we’ve got some craisins that need using! Here is another recipe I’ve had bookmarked to try:

The pictures look good and I’m interested in the process of soaking the grain.

This is the same recipe I discovered and love! I haven’t done it in a while, though, I should get on the ball. I also like using craisins.

Side question: Where did you get the glass jar? that size is great! I am having the most difficult time finding glass jars, especially with metal lids instead of plastic. (though I would take either!) I can easily get spagetti jars, but other sizes are hard to find. Any ideas?

Jefinner, I got the jar where I work. We get marachino cherries in those jars. Lately the cherries have been coming in plastic jars instead of the glass ones though. You could ask at schools, restaurants, or at the deli department of the grocery store. They might have some nice glass jars you could have.

Becka, my husband and I were in Maine last week and I got a FANTASTIC granola recipe from the chef at the hotel where we stayed in Bar Harbor. It’s rich but oh, so good. Can send it to you if you like. I remembered you had a granola recipe on here and looked it up.

Ann, I would love to see your new granola recipe. I hope it was cooler up in Maine than it has been here. We are getting a new kitchen floor this week so no cooking is going on for the moment.
