Ham for a small family

Do you ever get hungry for ham but find the prospect of utilizing a large piece of ham rather daunting? I have the perfect solution for you:

The Ham Slice

This nice little slice of ham costs about $4-5 dollars but can provide at least three meals for two people. I like to cut it into about five pieces. The meatier pieces can be browned in a skillet for a quick, easy meat serving and the piece with the bone in it can go into soup (such as corn chowder, ham and bean soup, or potato soup) or it can be diced up and used in scrambled eggs, egg casserole, or scalloped potatoes.

Here are a couple of pieces which have been browned in a skillet:

Here's a slice ready to be eaten:

This is delicious with a baked sweet potato!

Here's a bowl of bean soup:

So, keep this in mind the next time you get a hankering for ham.

I use ham steaks all the time! We love them.

Yum! We used to make a pot of Great Northern beans with a ham bone (and ham meat, of course!) for dinner in the winter when I was little. Delicious.

My family absolutely loves ham steaks! One steak will feed all 7 of us well. We grill ours–they are very good that way!

Because of the recent death in my family, my church supplied a delicious meal for the extended family the night before the funeral. With the baked beans, broccoli salad, macaroni and cheese, the church provided a huge spiral cut honey baked ham! The ham has long outlasted the side dishes, so I am being creative with using it. I’ve put two big pieces and the bone in the freezer for later use, but I’ve made a pasta-based casserole and a large quiche with the ham in addition to eating it with eggs for breakfast. We love ham, but I’m glad I have a freezer to hold some of it until we get a hankering for it again. I think the next use will be the bean soup–yours looks delicious! :)

One of our favorite recipes with ham steak is to top the grilled or brownded ham with a ring of pineapple and smother it with grated cheddar. Let the cheese melt–yummy. If you are really in a hurry, this can all be done in the microwave (but you’ll miss that grilled/browned flavor).
