All boxed up

Last fall we purchased a new dishwasher to replace the twenty year old one that came with our house. The new one is so quiet that I sometimes have to walk right up to it to be sure it is running. It also plays a little tune when the cycle is finished. 🙂

After the man finished installing the new dishwasher I asked if we could keep the box for the grandchildren. Rob cut a "skylight" in the top so they could have some light. Ryan, Avery, and Buddy have all enjoyed playing in the box.

Never a dull moment

CleanBuddy

One of our very favorite children's books is Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion. We have read that book many, many times to our own children and now we are reading it to our grandchildren. The story is about a white dog with black spots who hates baths. One day at bath time he runs away and gets very dirty. He becomes a black dog with white spots. There is more to the story, but I don't want to spoil the ending for you. 🙂

Well, today we had our own Harry the dirty dog moment. My husband comes home for lunch on Thursdays and Avery and Ryan were here for the day. A little before noon Avery was napping and Ryan was eating some applesauce while I was finishing up lunch preparation when I heard an odd noise. It sounded like Buddy, the cat, was playing with the metal venetian blinds, which we normally try to discourage. I went into the living room and checked the window there--no Buddy. I went into the dining room to check that window--no Buddy. I heard the noise again and realized it was coming from the living room. My first thought was that maybe a bird was in the chimney. I was astonished to see that it was Buddy--he had climbed up in the chimney!!! He extricated himself and I tried to wash him off a bit but he is now a white cat with gray smudges. We are thinking of hiring him out as a chimney sweep. 🙂

I'm sure some of my readers have had adventurous pets. Would any of you care to share your story?

Sweet. Cute.

I've been thinking about things which are sweet quite a bit recently. Our pastor has an object lesson for the children each Sunday evening. This past Sunday he showed the kids a jar of dill pickles and a jar of peach preserves. He talked about how cucumbers don't start out tasting sour and pickled but become that way as a result of soaking in the sour brine. The peach preserves which are sweet are cooked in a sugar syrup and become even sweeter. The analogy is that we as Christians need to be careful not to "soak" in the bitterness of the world we live in but to abide in the sweetness of the Lord.

We've been keeping our little grandson, Ryan about once a week while Mark and Katie go for her regular prenatal visits and run a few errands. Ryan loves Buddy the cat and we have been trying to teach him to be gentle with Buddy. We have also been working with Buddy (who is, after all, a cat and is somewhat playful) to be gentle with Ryan. Ryan just beams from ear to ear as he pets Buddy and then he says, "Sweet. Cute." We think those adjectives fit both of them. 🙂

Early Monday morning we heard the joyful news that a sweet little granddaughter had been born. Little Avery Nichole weighed in at 7 pounds 12 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long. Both mother and baby are doing well and hope to come home from the hospital soon. We are thrilled with this sweet (and cute) blessing from the Lord.

Here she is one day old:

A couple of new things

I have been writing blog posts in my head for several days now, but haven't had enough energy to sit down and actually write. I've had a bad cold all week and have been doing minimal housework and cooking and a lot of resting. I think I'm beginning to recover, but unfortunately, Rob is coming down with it now. 🙁

I think I have mentioned before that Rob usually bakes something for us every Sunday morning. He was a baker all through college and likes to keep his baking skills honed. 🙂 I saw a recipe for a Pear Puff Pancake on the Mennonite Girls Can Cook website and asked him if he would like to try it since I had all the ingredients on hand. We had never eaten a baked pancake like this before but we both enjoyed it. Rob was a bit alarmed at first when he saw that it puffed around the edges but was sunken in the middle. I had seen other recipes and pictures before and was able to reassure him that this was how it was supposed to look. The only changes he made to the recipe were to use a 9" pie plate and to use drained canned pears. He just warmed the pears a bit in the melted butter and then proceeded with the recipe.

Early this week I got a call from our vet, Dr. Carolyn Anderson from The Cat Clinic, telling us about a very sweet cat who was at the clinic and needed a good home. His former owner could no longer keep him and she was trying to find him a good home. Who could resist a come on like that? We went and met his owner yesterday and were approved for adoption. We went by the clinic today and brought him home. He's about a year and a half old and is very inquisitive and friendly. Nora stopped by with one of the children she cares for and the kitty doesn't seem to be afraid of children, which was something we were concerned about. We have decided to call him Buddy. I'm sure you will be hearing much more about him in the future. 🙂

Here are a couple of pictures of our newest family member:
