On the road again (another shameless Grandma post)

MichiganFebruary

DD Nora and I drove up to Michigan last weekend to help little Maddie celebrate her first birthday. Her actual birthday is on Valentine's Day but her family party was on Saturday. We were a bit concerned about how the weather might be for travel, but both of our travel days were clear and Nora and I had a nice time together during the trip.

We got to Michigan late Friday evening after the children were in bed. Drew got a new twin bed recently and was kind enough to let me sleep in it. Here is a picture of him in a rather serious moment:

Aunt Nora got up early Saturday morning and started entertaining the children at six A.M. Here she is later in the day holding the birthday girl who is modeling the pillowcase dress that Megan made her for the event.

Megan had the food all planned out. She made two kinds of soup and Nora made one. Meg also made two salads and baked cupcakes.

Jim's sister, Sharon, made a couple of Pinto Bean Pies as a dessert choice. They contain mashed pinto beans, coconut, and pecans. Have you ever tried Pinto Bean Pie? You couldn't really tell that there were pinto beans in the pie--it was more like one of those impossible pies with coconut and pecans.

I baked a little "smash cake" for Maddie and decorated it and the cupcakes.

Maddie grabbed the little cake and pulled it toward her and then just started pinching off dainty little bites. Her Aunt Nora helped her take a big handful of cake and then she really got into the swing of things!

After being the center of attention while eating her cake she was really hamming it up:

On Sunday Maddie wore the new little dress that I had made her for her birthday. It fit her well and was very appropriate for our little Valentine.

It was a very quick trip but both Nora and I were thankful that we were able to help Maddie celebrate her first birthday and wished that her Grandpa and Uncle Topher had been able to come too. For even more info about this event Megan has a recent blog post about it too. 🙂

She’s here

Thank you for all your prayers today. Little Madeleine Grace Hawkins was born at 10:48 this morning weighing 7 lbs. 6 oz. Mother and baby are doing very well. Megan said everything went perfectly. They even let her hold the baby before they finished stitching her up. The Lord has blessed us with a wonderful little Valentine and we can't wait to meet her.

Thinkin’ Pink

picture of Pink Stuff

We are thinking pink at our house this week! DD Megan and her husband Jim found out via ultrasound that baby #2 is a girl. We dearly love our two little grandsons, but are excited that there is going to be a little grand-daughter joining the family in the spring. Things are going well so far during this pregnancy and we would appreciate your continued prayers for Megan and baby girl.

For several weeks now I have been planning to host a give-away. Here is what is included:

picture of Fall Give Away

I had so much fun making my new fall table runner that I decided to make one of these insulated mats with the same turkey applique. The mat contains Insul-Bright which will deflect the heat from the table or counter-top and it is sized to fit under a 9" x 13" baking dish so you may find it will come in handy under a casserole this fall.

The second item is this little holder for calling cards or loyalty cards. I saw the idea on Copper's Wife aka Cheryl's blog and thought it would be perfect for all those store loyalty cards that were making it hard for me to close my wallet.

The final items in the give-away are a couple of knitted dishcloths. The winner can choose either two off-white or two blue, or one of each. 🙂

To enter the contest leave a comment telling about your favorite fall food or tradition. I will enter your name into the hat. Comments must be received by Monday, October 24th to qualify.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you. 🙂
