A day in the life of Ryan at Grandma’s house aka: Shameless Grandma Post

It's been a couple of months since Ryan has been coming to spend the day with me while his parents are at school. It's hard to believe that he's already seven months old. I've been meaning to post some pictures of our day to day activities for quite a while now. This week one of my blog readers asked to see some pictures of him, so that spurred me on to work on this post. These are just some of the cute pictures I have snapped over the course of the last few months.

Typical scenes at our house these days:

There are several diaper changes:

There's lots of play time in the exersaucer--a favorite!

There's generally some rocking--sometimes Grandpa gets to enjoy this.

He loves to play on the floor and is just on the verge of crawling.

Sometimes he plays on the bed although this is a limited activity now that he's nearly crawling.

Eating is a favorite activity, especially when it involves carrots or squash.

Can you tell we are having lots of fun together?

A new cookie recipe

A few weeks ago I had the discouraging experience of finding weevils in a brand new bag of flour in the pantry. This necessitated a thorough checking of everything in the pantry. I ended up disposing of some things and putting some things in the freezer and as much as possible in glass jars or tupperware-like containers. In the process I found some odds and ends that needed to be used up. One of these items was a half bag of dried blueberries. I found this cookie recipe and tried it recently. These cookies are really good--now I may need to go out and buy some more dried blueberries!

Oatmeal Cookies

3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
3 cups old-fashioned oats
1 1/2 cups white whole wheat flour
3/4 cup dried blueberries
3/4 cup white chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In mixing bowl cream butter with sugars and vanilla. Add eggs then baking soda and salt. Stir in oats, flour, blueberries, and chocolate chips. Drop dough by heaping tablespoonfuls onto parchment-lined cookie sheets and bake for 10-12 mins. or until lightly browned. Cool briefly on cookie sheets before removing. Makes about 5 dozen small cookies.

You can substitute raisins or craisins for the blueberries. The white chips would be good with cranberries but you might want to use chocolate chips with the raisins or you could substitute chocolate covered raisins for a taste thrill.

On a totally unrelated note another wild creature was in our house this evening:

Weekend update

We went to the lovely wedding of our daughter-in-law's sister Friday night. It was held at a beautiful location called the Acanthus on Lake Lyman in Greer, SC. There was a bit of delay at the start of the wedding because of a thunder shower, but eventually things could proceed as planned.

The owners built the house with the intent of using it for weddings and other receptions. Here's the front of the house:

They have this old car which they use to speed the bride and groom away after the reception:

Here is Elizabeth, the bride and her father, David walking down the lawn toward the lake where the wedding was held:

Here are Mark and Katie:

The reception was held in a pavillion there on the property. It was a dessert reception and the food was beautifully presented. The groom just graduated from Clemson and this was his cake:

Here are a couple more shots of some of the other food items:

Since Mark and Katie were both in the wedding Rob and I were given the task of watching Ryan for a while before and during the ceremony. He was very good and actually slept during most of the ceremony itself. Here he is with his doting grandpa:

Here's another shot while we were waiting out the rain storm:

And, finally, here's a picture of the newlyweds as they were about to leave for their honeymoon in their own vehicle.

Not much news from our neck of the woods

I truly don't have much to write about recently. We are finally about recovered from our big weekend just one month ago. I've got the house pretty well back in shape and Rob has been working on the yard and planting a few things in the garden.

It's exam week at school. Rob gave his first one on Saturday and has three more to go and then has to grade them all and figure final grades. Nora brought some things over here on Saturday morning for our subdivision's spring yard sale. She was able to get rid of I mean sell quite a few things. I didn't have much to sell this time because I usually donate things to a local charity pretty frequently to get them out of the house. I did manage to give away a couple of things and to sell one pair of shoes. I was really hoping to sell my vacuum cleaner — we recently replaced it with a newer model of the same brand. Anybody looking for a used vacuum that is a little worn looking but works well? It has loads of attachments and comes with eleven new bags.

I did manage to visit a couple other homes in the neighborhood that were having yard sales and found this item that I have been looking for:

We will be needing it in a few months when this little fellow comes over to visit:

I love Ryan's curly black hair.

For those of you in the Greenville area on Monday, May 2nd Pebble Creek Pizza is having an anniversary sale. 14" cheese pizzas will be sold for $3.99 from noon until 9 PM. (The flyer said there is a limit of 1000 per customer!) Additional toppings are $1.50. They do have very good pizza and this is a good price.
