On a recent Saturday morning my son Mark and grandson Ryan stopped by on their way to the local zoo and asked if I would like to come along with them. Mark attacks the zoo the way he attacks a shopping mall--you view the animal briefly and then move on to see the next one. This approach actually is preferred when you have an eighteen month old with you.
The zoo was very crowded because of the new baby giraffe, Kiko. All summer long people here in the area awaited news of the impending birth. He finally was born in late October . You can actually view the birth here and also watch him on a live feed. The live feed may only be available for a couple more months.
Here is baby Kiko. His name means Autumn's child.
Here are Kiko and his mother, Autumn:
We saw many other animals such as Joy the elephant, who is one of Ryan's favorites:
Near the exit of the zoo is a small area with barnyard animals that the children can interact with. Ryan enjoyed communing with the pig and the goat while having a refreshing drink of milk.
He also loves monkeys. Here is a picture of him with his favorite:
We had a visit from this unusual species at our house recently:
I hope you who are local will get to visit little Kiko soon or at least watch him on the zoo's website or webcam.
